Rainbow Fish
Chicken wire, nail polish, nuts & bolts, wire 7x26x19.5 The rainbow fish was inspired by one of my favorite childhood stories, Rainbow Fish, written and illustrated by Markus Pfister. This story has stayed in my memory since my childhood as I was fascinated by the rainbow fish’s shimmering scales and the touching lesson that the story conveyed: sharing is an act of love and sharing is powerful. I wanted to explore of the form and the artistic side of an animal like a rainbow fish by playing with unusual materials. I used chicken wire to form the base of the body and used a combination of metal wire and nail-polish to create the fish fins, tail, and accessories. Even though the material seemed to be at the opposite material makeup of an actual animal fish, they elements of wire were conducive to showing the flow and the movement of the fish swimming through the water. I wanted to make the fish reflect light so I used a lot of glossy and glittery nail polish on top of the acrylic paint I used to make the fish “rainbow fish.” |
