"Sidelong Glances"
Acrylic paint on canvas 22 x 16.5 inches Fish swimming towards me. I think “What is this creature? Is it a hand? Is it a fish? I need to take a closer look.” They slowly congregate around me, throwing cold sidelong glances. Though I can sense their presence, I close my eyes and neglect their shifting stares, awkward energy. The orange fish swimming on its back is me. I know I am different: I have fingers and ears for my fin, a hand for a body. I think about the other fish's smooth human legs, their piercing human eyes. In my mind, they become visual static, swirling and spasming around me, but I remember that when I’m upright, they’re all belly-up. It's all a matter of perspective. |
