Threads of Mrs. Park
Watercolor 14.5 x 19 inches In this watercolor painting of my grandmother, I show us connected. Her face is in the bottom left corner and my face is in the upper left corner. We are linked by her vanities like jewels or things she likes like fish which I chose to depict in its bony eaten state. I don’t depict a realistic image of my physical self but instead I chose to show myself like a soul that has been stripped of its unique characteristics. I did this to put more attention on my grandmother and also to show that I don’t feel like I have a clear identity when I’m with my grandmother because I feel like I have to conform to what she expects of me. We are connected but that connection has been a source of stress for me at times. However, it is through art I was able to start to appreciate my relationship with my grandmother. The process of depicting my feelings visually and honestly has helped me understand her better. |
