Flowing Peace

I made this piece out of white PVC sheets. I cut them up into strips and organized them into waves by bending them and glueing them together. I tried to tie in the theme of typography by making a distorted version of the English alphabet letter (lowercase) “Y”. I expressed in a more abstract way, not the way that you would see “y” in a formal letter or writing. I imagined that this may be the way that I could see the letter Y would be seen in nature. I made the letter “y” smooth and curving because I liked how that looked and that was the intuition that made me twist the cellophane into that shape. Also, I was inspired by the cursive version of “y” and its loops and curves. The cellophane I used is hard but I found that it can be bent into a smoother shape and it almost looks like thin human ribs when they are put next to each other. I think this shape almost looks like waves and gives a rather peaceful feeling to the viewer. It was difficult to show that this is the letter “y” explicitly since I was interpreting it in an abstract way. My final piece turned out to be a completely different form from my original sketch. After planning on this piece and moving on the creation stage, I realized that not all sketches may come to life. Sometimes, I have to work with the material in order to make it work.
