Hermit Crab Party
Styrofoam spheres, zippers, acrylic paint, string, i-clay, recycled shoe, fake eyelashes, bead [dimensions] [Weight] I took a lot of inspiration from myself and from one of my favorite children’s books, A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle. I thought about what animal would best fit my inner spirit and that would most likely be a hermit crab—an animal who is able to hide in its shell but is also free to express itself by changing its outside covering. This hermit crab in particular was made with the intention of showing the duality between shyness and flamboyance—the contrast between the idea of a “hermit” crab and a colorful party-goer, I used the foam spheres to make the shell and added the string as contrast to the foam material. As I wrapped each string carefully around the balls, I thought about all the things that made me happy and blessed for in life. A lot of my own personality came through in this sculpture—I may act shy at first but people tend to notice me because of my colorful and extravagant taste in fashion. This hermit crab may not be the loudest one at the part with its voice but it certainly is going to catch a lot of eyes with its costume. In other words, this sculpture is a message to the audience that there are many forms of expression and one of the most powerful ways of expression is through dress and ornamentation. |
