Starry Night
paper string, isopink, acrylic paint, watercolor I created a portrait of myself out of paper string and isopink. I wanted to create a realistic and fantastical image of myself, almost like creating a bust of myself for historical and memory safe-keeping. After I carved my face out of the isopink, I outlined the ridges and slopes of my face with the paper string. Tracing the outlines of my facial features forced me to observe and carefully track the ridges of each detail of my face with precision. I have always been interested in the swirling style and intense colors of Van Gogh’s oil paintings. These served as inspiration for the way that I painted myself in this sculpture. I used the swirls of Van Gogh’s Starry Night to portray myself in a dreamy state, almost as if I had stepped out of the painting with the oil paints stuck on my face. I wanted to create a version of myself that reflected the inner mysteries and intricate formations that I have inside myself (just like the stars in the Milky Way galaxy). |
